Why I Started Max James Goods

From Hospitality to Handcrafted

When the world paused in 2020, so did my path in architecture. I found myself back in Devon, immersed in hospitality — a fast-paced environment that taught me leadership, organisation, and resilience. But something was missing: creativity.

By day, I was managing restaurants. By night, I was sketching, researching materials, and reawakening a long-standing appreciation for design. Eventually, I picked up a tool, a piece of leather, and started crafting. What began as an outlet soon grew into something more.

Building Something Slower — and Better

Max James Goods was born from the desire to create something lasting. In a world driven by speed and disposability, I wanted to go the other way — toward timelessness, quality, and meaning. Each piece I make is an extension of this ethos: slow living, thoughtful design, and traditional craft.

Why Leather?

I chose leather because of its natural beauty and transformative qualities. Over time, it develops a patina unique to its owner — no two pieces age the same. I work exclusively with oak bark tanned leather from a local Devon tannery. This traditional method takes over a year but produces stronger, more characterful hides — without the harmful chemicals used in mass-market leather.

Designing With Purpose

My architectural background taught me to value proportion, material honesty, and detail — all of which guide my leatherwork today. Every stitch, edge, and cut is intentional. I design with longevity in mind, crafting items that won’t just last, but improve with age.
